**********We do not adopt outside of the Tampa Bay area************** For more information, please email: InquiryForNewHorizonDogRescue@gmail.com. 52 lbs 2 years of age Crate Trained Microchipped Housebroken As close to perfect as you can get! BJ was taken from an extremely overcrowded animal control facility that puts dogs down when they need space. At that facility BJ sat proudly and quietly in his kennel while other dogs were bouncing off the walls. His eyes alone drew us to him. Then his temperament: calm, respectful and warm. On his ride to our rescue location BJ came forward from the backseat only to gently kiss a total ... (Read More)stranger to him, a passenger pup sitting in the front seat. Once BJ arrived to our rescue he proved himself to be a stellar creature. He was quarantined with another dog from that shelter whose playful behavior was nipping and annoying. BJ was consistently patient with her. When she would nip his ear instead of growling or biting back, he would just turn his head again and again to protect his ear. Although she was overly zealous in play, laid back BJ not once showed her disrespect. BJ's owners did not provide BJ with responsible heartworm prevention. He is currently under a highly successful protocol that will render him heartworm free in 7-8 months, which will be provided in full to his adopter. If there were any dog we would keep in our rescue it's BJ; he continues to impress us with his balanced behavior with all living creatures; other dogs immediately trust him. He's a supreme leader of the pack. Depriving any dog of good nutrition deprives him of living a long and healthy life. Grain-free foods are what a dog needs and deserves. Rotate manufacturers. Why feed a dog the same food month after month? That only creates a dependency on the same food. Further, no dog food has it all. Take advantage of various food manufacturer's formulas. Your dog will benefit and love you for it! Rescue Me ID: 17-02-17-00223Kango (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Kango is tall and dark and handsome. He's a big, rowdy 'teenager'. He has a very dark brindle coat and strong features and looks scary like a guard dog should. He would be a great guard dog if jumping at people to get them to pet you is considered 'guarding'. He is very strong and very tall and just wants a good home with a yard and a good reason to run a little each day. (ball throwing or another big dog would work!!) He's only three years old and still has a lot of energy. Kango had a very bad fall in his last race and he's been healing for some time now. He's not perfect but he's a huge lump of love and he's ready for a home. Kango ... (Read More)would do best with a fenced yard and absolutely no cats. He is very fast and very prey driven. As this boy mellows with age, he's going to become the best dog you ever had. He has a lot of love to give. Win his trust and you will have a partner for life. To arrange to meet this dog and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Miss Hannah was a heck of a racing dog and she's going to be one heck of a house dog! She is petite, sweet and can't be beat!! She is a beautiful, red brindle girl with bright eyes and a happy, happy attitude. She is three years old (greys live to 10-13 years on average) and is healthy and so ready to go to a home. She's very cute, and very sweet and on the small side - trust me, she won't last long!! Only drawback - - She 'flunked' the cat test so we will not be adopting her to a home with cats. Rescue Me ID: 17-02-17-00172Bulldust (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This is Bulldust. His racing name was Boc's Bulldust so at first we called him BB for BB King. (He's got real soul and a laid back attitude.) But he had a short trial in a home and came back to us with the name Dexter and we like that better! Dexter is 4 years young and like most racing greys, at four they are just starting to settle down and appreciate the good life. He's open to offers from you. He's asked if you would please bring a photo of your couch!! Greyhounds don't HAVE to get on the couch of course. But they tend to search out the most comfortable place in the house to sleep. As we mentioned, Dexter was in a home for a short ... (Read More)while but that was 2 large dogs for the single lady and she decided it was too much for her to handle. But she wrote a wonderful explanation of her decision and glowing credit for what a great housedog he was. Dexter was eager to please and very loving. Dexter is a fun, playful and fairly energetic guy. He may be 'retired' but even retired greyhounds love to run - and they run FAST!! And then they love to nap. And they really nap well. If they run for two minutes, they'll nap between meals for two days. I hear Webster's next edition has a picture of a greyhound for the definition of 'couch potato' (Dexter will probably not be able to live with cats or other small creatures, though.) Our retired racers are not always perfect. You'll see some scrapes and nicks on BB/Dexter's coat from the fencing and kennels he's lived in all his life. Many of these imperfections will go away in time. He has something we call 'bald butt' in that much of his black fur has been rubbed off of his hind haunches. That may grow back once he's in a softer environment and eating good home cooking. But there's no guarantee. It only means he's a little less perfect for now. But he will be a wonderful house dog, great walking companion and will look awesome on next year's holiday card. Come meet him. He needs the practice meeting new people and maybe, just maybe, he's the right dog for you. Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This is Annie. She is 100% greyhound and 100% lovable! She is petite and fun and fast and never met a person she didn't like. She's a lively personality and very, very sweet. She is 2 years old and very cute. She passed her cat tolerance test so she probably will be able to live with felines as well as other dogs. She has beautiful markings and big, brown, attentive eyes! We don't show our dogs as being house-trained because they have been working (racing) dogs and have never lived in a house. However, the stringent training they have had in the kennel generally instills a good sense in them. They know not to go potty in their crate and ... (Read More)once they get used to your schedule, they know that this 'house' is their new crate and will know to wait until they are outside. So Annie is just about the perfect adoption greyhound. Well, almost. There is this one problem. Her right rear leg was injured in racing and it has not healed perfectly. There's really nothing constructive that can be done with it. It does not bother her and if she needs to run fast, she just holds it up! She's not perfect but she's perfect for someone - Maybe you? Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

This is Talented Ralph, age 3. He is a big, strong, black boy who ran 80 races and was retired. We haven't had him long so there's not a whole lot I can tell you yet. I can say that he is going to the vet this week to be neutered (don't tell him) and have his teeth cleaned and get all of his tests and shots, as all of our dogs do. Then he'll be looking for a home. He is ALL black except for a small spot on his chest. He is still getting used to our kennel but he has already kissed me and that's highly unusual for these dogs. They don't generally kiss - especially this quickly. So i'll go out on a limb to say he's an affectionate boy. He ... (Read More)learned the kennel routine here very quickly which is a BIG help with a large dog. That tells us he likes people and wants to please. Okay, you looked at the pictures. You may have noticed his 'Roman nose'. Yes, it is kind of hard to overlook. We like to think it makes him unique and special - Handsome even, in a particularly 'Godfather' way. Right? Hey, Gumba - Pass the Pizza!! (Oh, my! Do you think he's really an Italian Greyhound in disguise? Good Disguise!)     Maple is a very sweet and loving dog. Great with adults, kids, and babies. She is very anxious around other dogs, especially bigger dogs. She has some separation anxiety. PIease Read Before Adopting a Greyhound in Florida
Greyhound Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Greyhound is a reserved, elegant, intelligent breed. Greyhounds are gentle, sweet companions that can be a joy to own. Greyhounds are excellent choices for adoption as adults; former racers are already crate trained and easy to housebreak, and this dog adapts well to new owners. Greyhounds have a strong chasing instinct and should not typically be trusted with non-canine animals. Greyhounds do well with older, considerate children. They do not like to be teased. A Greyhound can live in an apartment and may even behave lazily indoors, but does need daily exercise. Greyhounds are sensitive to extreme cold and should wear a coat outside in the winter.
