Rescue Me ID: 16-07-29-00215Burt (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Burt is a lot of love in a small compact package - well small for a greyhound anyway. His nickname is Buzz (think: Burt''s Bees!) He is only 2 years old and has a beautiful red brindle coat. Greyhounds have a short, very thin coat so there is almost no shedding - especially with a boy like Burt. He is however, slightly imperfect. Please notice the handsome purple cast on his right rear leg. It was put there by an excellent orthopedic surgeon and he should be done with it the first week of August. His racing career ended in a spill but his repair work was done by one of the very best canine Orthopedic surgeons in Florida. After the ... (Read More)cast comes off, xrays will tell us if he needs further work. (Friends of Greyhounds will of course handle all the cost of the care from our vet for this injury.) We expect that he may have a bit of a limp but overall, it will not impact his ability to be an amazing house dog. He is a happy, playful guy! He has never lived in a home and you will be seeing the world throug new eyes. He is so loving and happy and is so ready for great family. Retired racers make excellent pets. The routine and training they have been given to live in the racing kennels means a lot less training for her new owners. Greyhounds adapt to homelife easily and gratefully. Even with the cast, Burt gets around quite well. He may never win a race again but I guarantee he can win your heart! He is gentle and sweet and has the biggest eyes! You really should meet him in person! Burt's cat test was rated a 'maybe' which means we were not sure about his ability to live with a cat. Generally with these 'maybe' dogs, if the cat is strong willed and puts the dog in his place, they will be alright together. If a cat is a runner though, the dog may give chase and that's not good. To arrange to meet this dog and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. You'll find our manual of care, our application and lots of good information. If you are local and ready to visit, call us at 954-578-0072 to make an appointment to come to our kennel in Sunrise.     We have greyhound siblings available!! This is quite a rare opportunity in the greyhound world!! This sweet little fawn girl is named Hotshot and she is quite small for greyhound standards. But she can run like the wind!! She has 127 races and is only four years old. She is a beautiful, friendly, sweet girl who is just looking for a happy, happy home. We also have her litter-brother, Wheels, in the kennel right now. We have Cricket, another litter sister out on a home trial. She came into our kennel a while ago. All the dogs in this litter are so special and sweet and gentle. You really need to come meet Hotshot and Wheels. Even though ... (Read More)these are ex-racing dogs, you don't need a large yard. A small fenced area is great for them or leash walks and an occasional trip to the dog park will do just fine. Even when they are racing professionally, they only race every four days or so.     Vicky is a very, very small red-brindle greyhound. We have only had her a little while but she is definitely sweet and loving and so very affectionate. She has had a serious leg injury that we need to learn more about so we will be getting her into the specialist after Memorial day. We''ll have more for you on Ms. Vickie as soon as we possibly can! Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Ironman is tall and handsome and has a whole lot of love to give. At 70 pounds, he still looks thin. He came to us last February and was adopted into a household with a mom, dad another greyhound and two children, 10 & 11. Everything was going great until mom went out one day and when she came home, Ironman was SOOOO excited to see her that he jumped on her. Her young son tried to grab his collar to save mom and in all the excitement, he was hurt by Ironman. It was more of a scratch than a bite and it happened in a split second. But mom and the kids were insecure around him after that and life was not good any more. So we agreed to bring ... (Read More)Ironman back to the kennel and find him a new, great home. Mom wrote up some notes for him. Among other things, she says that loves to go for walks with you. He will walk as far and as long as you can - - but he must mark everything for the first 3/4 mile!! He also enjoys barking at squirrels and cats and loves to have his rump scratched!! We have all of his records and history and vet records - - - Now all we need is a home. How about yours? Greyhound    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Very Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Andy is an extraordinary retired racing greyhound. One of four pups in his litter, he must have had lots of attention from his mom because he really likes women. He was a healthy, hard working dog and he ran 191 races. Racers are generally retired at 5 years old and Andy will be five next week. He's looking for a retirement home - - maybe your couch?? We have not cat tested Andy but i wouldn't hold out too much hope that he'll be tolerant of living with a cat. We'll see. He's a strong, healthy and smart boy. He's a bit older than some of our guys but with age comes wisdom and I've found that the mature dogs are way more appreciative of a ... (Read More)good home and take direction so much better. Rescue Me ID: 16-02-25-00161Billy (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Billy was a racing dog but not a particularly good one. So after 14 professional races, he was sent packing. I didn't even know they would allow a racer to run that many 'maiden' races!! He had lots of chances but it wasn't his thing. So now he is ready for his retirement job as a couch potato and bed warmer. Greyhounds make great pets. They are clean and have no doggie smell and have been bred for centuries to obey what their humans teach them. Of course, since they no longer have to follow the chariot to the hunting fields, you may want to do a little retraining. But generally, they will do anything for their human family. Billy was ... (Read More)in a home for a while but he is a powerful dog and as we understand it, he was being nagged by a small dog on a retractable leash and he panicked and snapped at it. Because of the bite, he had to leave town. Sometimes it is hard for people to understand how a big dog can be afraid of a small dog but when it's yapping and tying you up in a leash, it can be scary even for a big dog. The previous owners have written a long letter to tell the new owners all about Billy. They love him dearly and would love to hear from his new family. But they still have to live in the area and had to let Billy move out. According to the prior owners, he is smart and sweet and playful and very eager to learn. He will do really well with other greyhounds in the home, too. He fetches and does some basic commands and loves to be with people but does not enjoy other dogs - unless they are greyhounds. Billy did not test as cat tolerant here at our kennel and should not live with cats or small critters. He also has a microchip and the previous owners will assist with that ownership transfer if needed. To arrange to meet Billy and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. You'll find our manual of care, our application and lots of good information. We When you are ready, call us at 954-578-0072. if we're not around, the recording will give you our cell numbers. Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Happy Harry is a greyhound who has just arrived in our adoption kennel and we're still getting to know him. Complete information will be posted when we have it. But, we can tell you that he is a big, happy go lucky, healthy boy. He is young and full of life. There's no way to be sad around this guy! His long tail travels a lot of distance in a day! He has a great appetite and a great outlook on life. What a handsome, wonderful addition he will be for someone's home. Harry is a dark brindle boy and will be going to the vet quite soon. We will have him neutered and he'll have all of his tests and shots so he's ready to go to a wonderful ... (Read More)home. After he's had time to heal a bit and collect his thoughts - and his toys - we will test him for cat tolerance and enter the results here. But for now, he hasn't been tested. So we'll know more about this handsome happy boy in time. In the meantime, if you are considering adopting a greyhound, please call to plan a visit to our adoption kennel in Sunrise. For directions and more information, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org. Everything from photos to applications to the Adoption Manual and follow up letters from adopters is there. Animal ID: 54926Max (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Max has just turned five years young. The general lifespan of greyhounds is 12 to 14 years so he is an adult and you don't have to take him through puppyhood but he has a whole lot of love left to give. He's a sweet boy who will go for a walk with you or watch TV on the couch. Greyhounds make great couch potatoes. Greyhounds are also easy dogs to live with and want with all their heart just to please you. Max is healthy and up to date on all his shots and tests and is ready to go out the door. Max is a big tall boy who is so ready to be in a home. He was in one for a while but the kids drove him crazy and he needs a new spot. He has ... (Read More)wonderful, classic brindle markings and his coat is soft. He is quite big but has a lot of love inside. He'll do anything you can make him understand that you want. He loves to please and be with you. He has tested to be somewhat cat tolerant and will most likely get along with a feline, given a proper introduction and a oversight in the beginning. He would do probably do best with a cat with a dominant personality. But if the cat runs, he is likely to chase and greys are very fast. Friends of Greyhounds will even deliver him to your door! We like to bring the dog to your home so you can see how he handles your environment. Many ex-racing dogs have never gone up steps!! PIease Read Before Adopting a Greyhound in Florida
Greyhound Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Greyhound is a reserved, elegant, intelligent breed. Greyhounds are gentle, sweet companions that can be a joy to own. Greyhounds are excellent choices for adoption as adults; former racers are already crate trained and easy to housebreak, and this dog adapts well to new owners. Greyhounds have a strong chasing instinct and should not typically be trusted with non-canine animals. Greyhounds do well with older, considerate children. They do not like to be teased. A Greyhound can live in an apartment and may even behave lazily indoors, but does need daily exercise. Greyhounds are sensitive to extreme cold and should wear a coat outside in the winter.
