Rescue Me ID: 16-04-25-00707BLONDIE (female)

Greyhound Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Blondie is a lover. She spent most of her life in a kennel and craves to give and receive affection. She loves long walks, playtime (she loves to play fetch with her squeaky Kong tennis ball and going to the dog park). She also loves spending time cuddling on the couch and sleeping with you. She's a little bit timid at first in new situations but, warms up very quickly and is very social. Friends and even veterinarians who meet her fall madly in love with her. She's just a great girl. She likes other dogs, cats, kids and most everyone. She requires companionship, being part of your life. She is extremely smart and learns very quickly ... (Read More)through positive training. Affection is what motivates her. Blondie is 3 years old. She is house trained, she will bring your shoes out and other items but does not chew them. She is up to date on vaccines, is spayed and microchipped. Blondie weighs 70 lbs right now but is now trimming down with exercise. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-04-18-00338Asia (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Asia has just arrived in our adoption kennel and we're still getting to know her. She is a Brindle girl on the small side (for a greyhound) and a little on the shy side, but that may just be the new surroundings. She was born June 16, 2014 so she is under 2 years old. She is a healthy girl with a nice coat, tall ears, and a tail that is starting to wag. She'll be going to the vet very soon and will be available for adoption after that. She has not yet been cat tested. We will post that as soon as we can. And we'll give you more information as we get to know her. We do not mark the 'house trained' section because our greyhounds are ... (Read More)ex-racers and have not lived in a house. They are however crate trained and we will teach you how to transition that crate training into the easiest house training you've ever done. In the meantime, if you are considering adopting a greyhound, please call to plan a visit to our adoption kennel in Sunrise. For directions and more information, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org. Everything from photos to applications to the Adoption Manual and follow up letters from adopters is there. Animal ID: 1246Janelle (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Janelle is a playful and friendly greyhound girl, not quite two years old, and a smaller greyhound at just 59 lbs. She gets along well with other dogs and has tested as tolerant of cats (but has not yet lived with cats). We are working with her on learning good house manners--she is doing well at this. Janelle still needs to learn to walk calmly on a leash without pulling you along. She is happy, playful, and more active than most greyhounds, so she would do well in a home with a fenced yard or someone who would be willing to take her for at least a 1/2 hour walk each day. Since she is so young, Janelle still has some puppyish ... (Read More)tendencies and would do best in a home with an experienced dog person. (Less)

Leah is a very loving and fun girl. I've had her since she was 6mon. now she's 6 1/2 years. She's never bit a person or chewed anything or dug in the yard. always been housebroken. never caged. she just recently started to get in fights with my 8 year old dog. I can't take any chances with my 2 yr old son running around. she's very healthy. any vet has said her and her coat are the healthiest they've seen. maybe she would get along with a different dog but, would probly prefer a one dog house. P.S. I love her to death and do not want her to go so hopefully its a good home. Thank you.

Rescue Me ID: 16-03-28-00428Denim (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Denim is girl!! When we saw her on our list, we thought Denim was a great boy''s name. Now that I''m used to it, I think it''s an even better girl''s name. Don''t you agree? Of course, if you adopt her, you can change it and it won''t hurt her feelings at all. Denim was born December 15th, 2011 and is four years young and ready to retire! She ran 108 professional races and now just wants to run around your yard. She is a Sagittarius by birth and it''s a good fit for her. The Greeks who gave us the zodiac signs said that Sagittarius was half human and half beast. Greyhounds are dogs (beasts) but they are so ... (Read More)intuitive with their owners and become so connected to them, it is easy to consider these dogs, like Denim, at least half human! Denim is a big, happy, strong girl but sweet and gentle in her nature. She may run and play like the dickens and then join you on the couch (if you let her on the couch) for a cuddle and a nap. We just completed Denim's cat testing and we do not think that she will be able to live with a cat. Her attention to our 'test cat' was just too intense and when he ran, she ran, too. Denim is not cat tolerant. Sagittarius is an active outdoor sign, always teeming with activity. When she''s on the go, it''s go-go-go. And when we stop, we nap, nap, nap!! Greys are especially easy to live with unless you like to vacuum a lot. Then you may find yourself moving her around. But they are flexible and forgiving and will go right back to sleep. Like the Sag, Denim and our other greyhounds are loving, devoted family members. If you have never owned a greyhound, be prepared to regret waiting so long to discover them!! Denim will steal your heart with little looks and tiny kisses. They are big dogs and they are not perfect because they have never lived in a home before and don''t know the rules yet. But they want to learn and you will have to teach her. It is time well spent to find a dog that wraps herself around your heart. To arrange to meet Denim and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. You'll find our manual of care, our application and lots of good information. We are based in South Florida and do not generally adopt out of our area. Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Otis a tall, slender athlete who wants nothing more than a loving family to come find him! He is handsome and young and has a beautiful, athletic physique. He is three years old and has a lot of love to give. Greyhounds have a natural lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Otis would love to run in your backyard or at the dog park and when he does, you will be in awe. Greyhounds do need to run but they only run every few days and although they run fast, they don't run long. Afterwards, they nap, nap, nap. Greyhounds sleep a whole lot! Greyhounds are crate trained and know not to go potty in their crate. It's fairly easy to get them on your schedule ... (Read More)using the crate and you will quickly find your dog is house trained. As additional insurance, the boys come with a 'belly band' that we will explain the use of. It's a wonderful, incredibly effective tool and you'll wonder why you didn't know about it sooner. Otis had 87 races in his career. He was pretty well cared for and this guy is a young, healthy athlete. He does have one foible according to his trainer. He HATES to have his feet touched! So pet him all you want. Play with his belly or his ears, but NOT his toes!! That's not too much to ask anyway! Because of that situation, we have marked him as not a good dog to put with small children. Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Billy was a racing dog but not a particularly good one. So after 14 professional races, he was sent packing. I didn't even know they would allow a racer to run that many 'maiden' races!! He had lots of chances but it wasn't his thing. So now he is ready for his retirement job as a couch potato and bed warmer. Greyhounds make great pets. They are clean and have no doggie smell and have been bred for centuries to obey what their humans teach them. Of course, since they no longer have to follow the chariot to the hunting fields, you may want to do a little retraining. But generally, they will do anything for their human family. Billy was ... (Read More)in a home for a while but he is a powerful dog and as we understand it, he was being nagged by a small dog on a retractable leash and he panicked and snapped at it. Because of the bite, he had to leave town. Sometimes it is hard for people to understand how a big dog can be afraid of a small dog but when it's yapping and tying you up in a leash, it can be scary even for a big dog. The previous owners have written a long letter to tell the new owners all about Billy. They love him dearly and would love to hear from his new family. But they still have to live in the area and had to let Billy move out. According to the prior owners, he is smart and sweet and playful and very eager to learn. He will do really well with other greyhounds in the home, too. He fetches and does some basic commands and loves to be with people but does not enjoy other dogs - unless they are greyhounds. Billy did not test as cat tolerant here at our kennel and should not live with cats or small critters. He also has a microchip and the previous owners will assist with that ownership transfer if needed. To arrange to meet Billy and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Very Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Darla is a chicken dog and a scardy cat all rolled into a greyhound. She is very, very shy and very scared of new people and places - and noises and everything else. Not surprisingly, Darla never had a professional race. This beautiful, shiny black princess has tested cat tolerant and was more afraid of the cat than the cat was of her. But she will not be a good dog for leash walks - at least not unless she grows out of her fears which may or may not happen. But when she is afraid, she cowers down. She does not snap or attempt to defend herself. She just gives up. She needs someone to build up her confidence. Darla will be a wonderful, ... (Read More)dedicated, incredibly loyal dog once you win her over. She wants so much to be loved but it's not her nature to trust anyone right away. The look in her eyes when she is scared and backing away from you will break your heart. This may be a matter of chemical imbalance that a vet can help you fix over time. She needs a loving, relatively quiet home and a parent with lots of patience. She is a good girl and i think there's an incredibly loving dog inside that scared, shiny black coat. I have placed other dogs over the years that were as scared like Darla. Many of them have turned into wonderful, confident dogs. Remember that we only have them in the kennel for a short time. If you adopt Darla, you will have a devoted friend for life and that can change both of your lives and personalities! PIease Read Before Adopting a Greyhound in Florida
Greyhound Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Greyhound is a reserved, elegant, intelligent breed. Greyhounds are gentle, sweet companions that can be a joy to own. Greyhounds are excellent choices for adoption as adults; former racers are already crate trained and easy to housebreak, and this dog adapts well to new owners. Greyhounds have a strong chasing instinct and should not typically be trusted with non-canine animals. Greyhounds do well with older, considerate children. They do not like to be teased. A Greyhound can live in an apartment and may even behave lazily indoors, but does need daily exercise. Greyhounds are sensitive to extreme cold and should wear a coat outside in the winter.

Greyhounds are the fastest dogs in the world. The Greyhound is one of the most ancient dog breeds. Greyhounds are descended from Middle Eastern dogs but have been in England since before 900 A.D. Retired racing Greyhounds are usually put down unless they are adopted!
