Rescue Me ID: 16-11-17-00130Gert (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This lovely young, four year old girl is raced as JB's No Regrets. We've all seen the Milky Way commercial with the tattoo error. The big man's arm was supposed to say 'No Regrets' but it came out 'No Regerts'. So when No Regrets came into the kennel, she was dubbed 'Gert'. If you adopt her, you can change her name. She is beautiful. At four years old, she and her brother (see Lee - brindle male) were retired from racing Gert ran 146 races without an injury. She's good. She's now ready to smoke 'em at the local dog park! Gert is a smaller sized greyhound with a beautiful red coat and big, big brown eyes. She is affectionate and quiet and ... (Read More)once she's been to the vet she will be ready to go to a home. If you've been looking for a smaller, sweeter, beautiful female greyhound, you have to come meet Gert. Gert has not yet been tested for cat tolerance but as soon as we have done that, we will post the results. Meantime, our adoption application and Manual are both on our website. To arrange to meet this dog and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. You'll find our manual of care, our application and lots of good information. We are based in South Florida and do not generally adopt out of our area. There are many other greyhound adoption groups in the country and we prefer that you adopt from a local group so that you and your new dog have the backup and support available if you have questions. If you are local and ready to visit, call us at 954-578-0072 to make an appointment to come to our kennel in Sunrise. If we're not around, the recording will give you our cell numbers. You can also email us at fogdogs@comcast.net We'd love to hear from you! Greyhounds make the most amazing pets. Come make a fast friend today. You'll be glad you did. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-17-00128Lee (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This retired racer is looking for a home. So is his litter sister, Gert. Please pardon the poor photography but Lee just had his whole world changed and he's not really anxious to be a super-model. See he ran 146 races and now finds himself unemployed. Friends of Greyhounds gave him a ride from his racing kennel to our kennel and tucked him in with a soft blanket and toys. We stopped calling him 'No Fee' and changed it to Lee. We keep talking to him about being a 'house dog' and having a 'family' but truth is, he can't identify with that and he's kind of confused. it's a big help for him that his sister is here, too. Lee is a smaller boy ... (Read More)and quite handsome. Our photos don't do him justice but until he settles in we won't be able to do much more than this. Frankly, i hope someone can look past the photography and still come meet Lee and see for yourself what a sweet and sensitive soul he is. It would be good for him to have company! Lee is a smaller boy and insecure right now. His personality will develop when he gets into a home. This will be a wonderful, loving hound. He will need to be cat tested and he will be scheduled to visit our vet and can be delivered to his new home. Please feel free to check out Gert (JB's No Regrets) who is his sister and also available right now. it is unusual to be able to get littermates!! Rescue Me ID: 16-11-17-00126Tabby (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed

Tabby arrived in our kennel last Sunday and we don't expect her to be here very long. She is a beautiful girl, incredibly muscled and sleek. The photos don't do her justice. She is quiet and unexpectedly careful in her dealings with others, both human and canine. She is much more polite than you'd expect from a girl with 138 races under her belt. At four years of age, she finds herself unemployed. She has scars from the training and the racing world but they are all healed over long ago and are just part of her past. They blend in with her coat and make her the dog she is today. She is smaller sized and although she's quite new to our ... (Read More)kennel, she appears to be very sweet and has the potential to be an amazingly devoted dog. She likes to cling and wants to be in touch all the time. The next items on her agenda are to visit the vet for her spay surgery, dental cleaning & shots. And of course, there will probably have to be a cat tolerance test. Then she will be ready to go. To arrange to meet this dog and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-17-00116Keene (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Have you always wanted a big, strong greyhound to play with? One so good looking that he will bring traffic to a squealing halt? Come meet Keene! A lot of greyhounds have gone through our rescue but Keene is one of the strongest and tallest and most handsome boys we've ever had! He will walk well on a leash but you'll want to be in an area with few cats or little dogs to distract him. If he decides to take you across the street to meet a cat, you're going - like it or not!! So a fenced yard might be a plus for this guy. He was a terrible racer so at the age of 2, he finds himself homeless and unemployed. He has been to the vet and is ... (Read More)ready and waiting for his new home - maybe yours? To arrange to meet this dog and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. Rescue Me ID: 16-10-13-00211Reward Joy (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Basic Info: Reward Joy is a 'velcro' dog - she leans on you to make sure you are still there to pet her! She is friendly, calm and right now, a little confused. Joy first came to our kennel in August, 2010, and was quickly adopted by a wonderful family in Pembroke Pines. But this week we received a call and Joy had to come back. Seems daddy passed away and mom has her hands full. She and her son will be moving out of the house and where they are going thjey can only have a little dog. So Joy is back with us at the age of nine. She knows how to live in a house and is fine with cats and kids and small dogs. She already knows how to get on ... (Read More)the couch, too! Right now she's nervous and scared but she's active and checking absolutely everything out. Since she has been in a home, you would only need to use a crate for a short time to get her on your schedule. She's a very sweet and healthy (bordering 'chunky') girl with a beautiful fawn-brindle coat. She already knows how to leash walk and how to behave. Please consider Joy when you are looking. She's a sweet girl who was dealt a bad hand. I will work on putting updated photos up in the next day or two. To meet Joy and all our other wonderful, ready-to-go dogs, email (fogdogs@comcast.net) or call the office (954-578-0072) or call my (Michelle's) cell at 954-937-9663. Rescue Me ID: 16-10-13-00204Ralph (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This is Talented Ralph, age 3. He is a big, strong, black boy who ran 80 races and was retired. We haven't had him long so there's not a whole lot I can tell you yet. I can say that he is going to the vet this week to be neutered (don't tell him) and have his teeth cleaned and get all of his tests and shots, as all of our dogs do. Then he'll be looking for a home. He is ALL black except for a small spot on his chest. He is still getting used to our kennel but he has already kissed me and that's highly unusual for these dogs. They don't generally kiss - especially this quickly. So i'll go out on a limb to say he's an affectionate boy. He ... (Read More)learned the kennel routine here very quickly which is a BIG help with a large dog. That tells us he likes people and wants to please. Okay, you looked at the pictures. You may have noticed his 'Roman nose'. Yes, it is kind of hard to overlook. We like to think it makes him unique and special - Handsome even, in a particularly 'Godfather' way. Right? Hey, Gumba - Pass the Pizza!! (Oh, my! Do you think he's really an Italian Greyhound in disguise? Good Disguise!) Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Fireball is a tall, handsome brindle boy who is looking for a home. He washed out as a racing after only 8 races! He is just two years old and a very good looking boy. He is healthy and happy, but homeless!! We have not had him very long but we know he comes from a very good kennel. He has been to the vet and is ready to go into a home. He likes squeaky toys and cookies and a nice run in the yard (but a dog park will do, too) For those of you who know greyhounds, this is a healthy, reasonably unscarred dog with no leg injuries and only 2 years old - the 'holy grail' of greyhound adoption! First come, first serve. The dog he came in with ... (Read More)has already been adopted! He would fit perfectly in your yard and make a very handsome statement on the end of your leash!     This beautiful, sleek black girl is called Dusty. She is being treated for a badly broken leg and is just now coming available for adoption. She is two years young and very sweet and happy. She is bandaged and is healing very slowly, fighting both pain and infection, but she still has the best attitude ever. I don't know how she does it! She is special. Rescue Me ID: 16-10-13-00162Darla (female)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Darla is a chicken dog and a scaredy cat all rolled into a greyhound. She is very, very shy and very scared of new people and places - and noises and everything else. Not surprisingly, Darla never had a professional race. This beautiful, shiny black princess has tested cat tolerant and was more afraid of the cat than the cat was of her. She is generally comfortable with other greyhounds in the home, too. But she will not be a good dog for leash walks - at least not unless she grows out of her fears which may or may not happen. She was in a home for a while and was making great headway until July 4th came around. The neighborhood was ... (Read More)tightly packed townhouses and the neighbors went fireworks crazy. Darla was traumatized and is further back and more afraid than when she arrived there. They had to give her back to us for her own sake. She couldn't even bring herself to go out in their small, safe, backyard any longer. She absolutely will need a home with a fenced yard where she can go potty and run once in a while. But to her credit, when she is afraid, she cowers down or freezes. She does not snap or attempt to defend herself. Sometimes in her panic, she will run away from you, hence the request for a 'small' yard. Sometimes she just gives up but you can't count on that. She needs someone to love her and care for her and build up her confidence again. She just turned 2 years old in Feb. 25. Darla will be a challenge for a new owner. She wants so much to be loved but it's not her nature to trust anyone right away. She was doing so much better in her foster home but July 4th set her way, way back. We have tried a number of things to help her. Some worked for a little while but none were a real 'cure'. She needs a loving, relatively quiet home with at least one other greyhound and a parent with lots of patience. She is a good girl and i think there's an incredibly loving dog inside that scared, shiny black coat. I have placed other dogs over the years that were scaredy cats. Many of them have turned into wonderful, confident dogs. Darla is the worst we have and we would dearly love to find an experienced, loving, greyhound-saavy family for her. If you would like to meet Darla, please email us at fogdogs@comcast.net or call the office at 954-578-0072. If we're not there, the tape will give you our cell numbers. Call our cells! Rescue Me ID: 16-10-13-00152Jackson (male)

Greyhound    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Jackson is a smaller boy, four years old, white with small patches of fawn on his ears and tail. He is sweet as all get out and wants to be with someone all the time. He is even happy to spend time with cats, small dogs or other fluffy critters. He is a very special guy. And sooooo handsome! A smaller sized, white male is like the perfect dog but of course, none of us are perfect and neither is this FoG dog. There''s a couple points to consider. First, he doesn''t like to be alone. He was in a home for almost nine months and he developed tremendous separation anxiety. Normally having another dog around is enough to prevent SA but ... (Read More)apparently Jackson was so very attached to his humans that he just could not be without them. He now has a few scars from breaking out of his kennel. They had two small dogs but not a greyhound. We don't know if that would make a difference or not. Then there''s his foot. He is missing a few toes on on one of his front feet so he holds his foot up when on hard surfaces. The vet says it is a birth defect and it didn''t keep him from racing so we just need to understand that it makes him more special. It doesn't hurt him. He runs and plays like the other dogs and doesn''t know he''s different. And then there''s one more item. It''s more critical and I know it''s going to scare some people away. But I hope there''s just one person out there who can look past this. Jackson is allergic to anesthesia. There is a 'low dose' anesthesia that can be used for some situations and new developments in the Veterinary world are working to make anesthesia even more tolerable for dogs like Jackson. The most common problem that requires anesthesia in greyhounds is dental problems. So if you commit to taking good daily care of his teeth, you've won half the battle. There are also great non-anesthesia dental alternatives out there now but regular maintenance is the key to good dental health. Research is coming up with all kinds of things and maybe soon we''ll have a 'non-anesthesia anesthesia'. But until then, you would need to keep your vet informed about Jackson. Jackson is a lively, handsome, healthy, happy boy who deserves a good home. He has a lot of love to give! Come visit him! We think a retired person or couple with a fenced yard would be ideal for Jackson! And if that's you, please consider coming to meet him! For more information about how to make an appointment to visit Jackson or any of our other dogs, or for any other information about adopting a retired racing greyhound, please visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org.     Maple is a very sweet and loving dog. Great with adults, kids, and babies. She is very anxious around other dogs, especially bigger dogs. She has some separation anxiety. Given her breed and age, she would do best in a home where she can get ample exercise, preferably a big yard, and a loving and patient family to help socialize her properly with other animals. If you give her that, you will never have to ask for a better dog and most loving addition to your family!

Greyhound    Age: Adult

Andy is an extraordinary retired racing greyhound. One of four pups in his litter, he must have had lots of attention from his mom because he really likes women. He was a healthy, hard working dog and he ran 191 races. Racers are generally retired at 5 years old and Andy will be five next week. He's looking for a retirement home - - maybe your couch?? We have not cat tested Andy but i wouldn't hold out too much hope that he'll be tolerant of living with a cat. We'll see. He's a strong, healthy and smart boy. He's a bit older than some of our guys but with age comes wisdom and I've found that the mature dogs are way more appreciative of a ... (Read More)good home and take direction so much better. And don't let that little bit of gray on his nose fool you. Greys have a natural lifespan of 12-14 years. Andy has a lot of love left to give. To arrange to meet Andy and our other available greys, visit our website: www.friendsofgreyhounds.org for all the details. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Greyhound in Florida
Greyhound Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Greyhound is a reserved, elegant, intelligent breed. Greyhounds are gentle, sweet companions that can be a joy to own. Greyhounds are excellent choices for adoption as adults; former racers are already crate trained and easy to housebreak, and this dog adapts well to new owners. Greyhounds have a strong chasing instinct and should not typically be trusted with non-canine animals. Greyhounds do well with older, considerate children. They do not like to be teased. A Greyhound can live in an apartment and may even behave lazily indoors, but does need daily exercise. Greyhounds are sensitive to extreme cold and should wear a coat outside in the winter.
